This week in Pomona-Pitzer Athletics saw yet another school record fall on the track, a pair of shutout wins on the tennis courts, and four teams honored for their work in the classroom.

Ailene Nguyen '16 became the latest Sagehen to put her name in the school record books, as she broke the Pomona-Pitzer mark in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 10.5 inches. That broke the old record of 36-3 1/2 which had stood for 28 years, since it was set by Lisa Armstrong. Nguyen also long jumped 17-10 3/4, which is the No. 3 all-time Pomona-Pitzer mark, as she finished first in both events at an event with five SCIAC teams competing (Chapman, La Verne, Whittier and Occidental were also in attendance). In addition, she ran 12.82 in the 100 meters to finish third, and took second in the 200 meters at 26.47, which is the No. 10 all-time PP mark.

Other highlights from Strehle Track saw Erin Delaria '15 pole vault a personal best of 10-5 1/4, which is the No. 3 all-time Pomona-Pitzer mark. The 4x100 relay team of Katie Barton '15, Leslie Rice '16, Nguyen and Joyce Nimocks '15 ran a 50.39, which is the No. 7 all-time Sagehen mark. Kaya LeGrand '15 clocked 13:36.32 in her first-ever 3000-meter steeplechase to record the No. 10 all-time race in Pomona-Pitzer annals.

On the men's side, Pryor Stroud '15 led a 1-2-3 finish in the 1500 meters, and Ben Girodias '15 led a 1-2-4 finish in the 5000. John Fowler '16 was second and Paul Picciano '16 third In the 1500' while Alex Johnson PI '13 was second in the 5000 with David Erf '13 fourth. The 800 meters saw the Sagehens finish 2-3 as Dom Reinhold '13 was second with a 1:59.61, followed closely by Michael Cork '16 in 2:00.48. Corey Purcella '16 was third in the steeplechase with a 10:05.19, Matt Owen PI '13 had a 12-7.25 to come in second in the pole vault, and Garret Bell '14 was second in the hammer throw at 129-11 (and third in the shot put at 40-1.5).

Women's Tennis continued its strong start to the 2013 season with a pair of 9-0 wins at Pauley Courts, defeating Whittier on Friday and Cal Lutheran on Saturday without dropping a set in singles. The Sagehens continued to get strong contributions from its freshman class, as Marie Fleming '16 moved up to No. 4 singles and earned 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1 wins, Mae Coyiuto '16 earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory on Saturday, and Lea Lynn Yen '16 added a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 in her first singles match, while also improving to 3-0 in doubles with Arthi Padmanabhan ‘14.

Baseball defended its home field as well with a key doubleheader sweep of Redlands on Saturday. The Sagehens had a 9-1 lead at Redlands in the first game of the series at Redlands, keyed by a grand slam from Simon Rosenbaum '16, before the Bulldogs came back for a 13-9 win. Pomona-Pitzer bounced back well, though, earning a tight 6-4 win in the opening game on Saturday, keyed by 3-for-5 performances from outfielders Mike Moyer '13 and Nick Gentili '13, and then rolling to a 13-3 win in the nightcap as Rosenbaum threw a complete game to improve to 4-0 on the mound.

Softball also had a strong bounce-back performance by splitting a doubleheader with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, falling 5-4 in the opener and winning the nightcap 5-4. The Sagehens trailed 4-2 in the nightcap, but Ashley Morello PI '15 tied it with a two-run single in the fourth and Susanne Boden '16 added the game-winning RBI in the sixth. Aryana Yee '16 was 2-for-3 in the nightcap, and Emily Glass '15 was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the opener.

Women's Water Polo had four close matches this weekend at Cal Lutheran's Posada Royale Invitational, defeating Occidental 8-5 and falling 14-12 in overtime to Azusa Pacific, 9-8 to Cal Lutheran, and 10-9 to Villanova. Chrissie Alving-Trinh '15 helped key the Occidental win with two goals in a decisive 4-0 third quarter. The Sagehens will co-host the Claremont Convergence this Friday and Saturday with matches taking place all day at Haldeman Pool (Pomona-Pitzer faces UC Irvine at 12:40 p.m. and Cal Baptist at 6 p.m. on Friday, then faces Concordia at 11:40 a.m. and Long Beach State at 5 p.m. on Saturday).

The national governing bodies for Cross Country and Swimming both released their top academic teams this week, and the Sagehens ranked in the top seven in Division III in all four sports. Women's Swimming/Diving ranked first in the nation with a 3.59 GPA, while Men's Swimming/Diving was second nationally with a 3.58. Women's Cross Country, meanwhile, ranked second nationally with a 3.71, and the Men's Cross Country team was seventh with a 3.53.
