This week in Pomona-Pitzer athletics featured the debut in the national rankings for the Baseball team, which won two of three at the Tulsa Invitational Games, a 5-1 week for the Softball team, and a pair of 20-goal games for the Women’s Lacrosse team.

Baseball moved into the rankings in the American Baseball Coaches Association top 25 poll at No. 18 and put its ranking to the test at the Tucson Invitational Games. The Sagehens opened with an easy 11-2 win over Macalaster, and then split a pair of one-run contests, falling 4-3 in 10 innings to Buena Vista and defeating Gustavus Adolphus 5-4.

Jake Bruml ’15 earned the pitching win on the first day of the trip, improving to 5-1 this season and 12-1 in his career on the mound, and then had a key RBI triple in a four-run eighth inning in the Gustavus Adolphus win, as the Sagehens rallied from a 4-1 deficit. Nick Gentili ’13 helped send the Buena Vista game to extras with a two-run double in the eighth to tie the game before the Sagehens fell in the tenth.

Softball began the week with a sweep of Puget Sound (3-2, 2-1), split two games with Williams, thanks to a seventh-inning comeback in the nightcap for a 3-2 win, then swept Occidental 2-0 and 6-3. Fiona Riley ’15 was 3-1 in the pitching circle with a save and a 1.77 ERA, including a shutout against Occidental. Kathryn Rabak ’13 homered in the first game against Williams, and tied the nightcap with a two-out RBI single in the nightcap, before Leah Bleichner ’15 won it with a walk-off single. Lauren Boden ’14 batted .545 on the week, including a 3-for-4 finale against Occidental, with a single, double, triple and two RBI.

Women’s Lacrosse opened the week with a 20-14 win over Puget Sound on Tuesday, and then split two games on its trip to Tennessee, falling 10-9 to host Sewanee after a valiant comeback and then defeating Oglethorpe 20-2. The Puget Sound game featured seven goals from Jana London PI ’14, three goals and four assists from Logan Galansky ’14 and three goals and two assists from Emma Molloy PI ’13.

Against Sewanee, Pomona-Pitzer trailed 8-2 early in the second half, but rebounded to come all the way to within 9-8 and 10-9, but couldn’t pull even, despite outshooting its opponents 24-7 after halftime. Galansky had three goals and an assist to lead the way. The Sagehens then had four different players tally hat tricks in the win over Oglethorpe, including London, Grace Geller ’16, Julie Necarsulmer ’15 and Sarah Markowitz PI ’16.

In Women’s Track and Field, Ailene Nguyen ’16 broke her own school record in the triple jump with a 36-11 ¾, and Katie Barton ’15 moved into second place in the 400-meter hurdles with a 63.67 at a SCIAC Quad meet hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. On the men’s side, the Pomona-Pitzer 4x100 relay team ran a 42.66, the fastest time in the program since 1992. The Sagehen team of Alex Chong PI ‘16, Titus Van Hook ‘15, Matt Sloane ‘15 and Greg Hook PI ’14 finished the race in 42.66, placing eighth all-time in the history of the program.
