Teofilo Ruiz to Deliver Phi Beta Kappa Lecture on "The Other 1492" on April 22
Teofilo Ruiz, a prolific scholar of medieval and early modern Spain and a member of the history department at UCLA, is coming to Pomona College as the Phi Beta Kappa lecturer of 2013. He will lecture on “The Other 1492” on Monday, April 22, at 4:15 p.m., in Hahn 101 (420 N. Harvard Ave., Claremont).
His talk will consider the fates of Muslims, Jews, and the inhabitants of the New World, all of whom were directly affected by the events that unfolded in Castile that fateful year.
An award-winning teacher and a perennial student favorite, Ruiz recently received a National Humanities Medal from President Obama for his “inspired teaching and writing." Ruiz previously taught at Brooklyn College, the CUNY Graduate Center, the University of Michigan, the Ecole des hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, and Harvard. His books include The Terror of History (2011), the co-edited volume Diario de la expedicion de Fray Junipero Serra..en 1769 (2011), and A King Trayles: Festive Traditions in Late Medieval and Early Modern Spain (2012).
