Hip-Hop Musical "Krunk Fu Battle Battle" Performances at Pomona College
The Pomona College Theatre and Dance Department’s second production of the spring semester, Krunk Fu Battle Battle by Qui Nguyen, opens tomorrow night for a five-performance run through the weekend. The production is directed by Professor of Theatre Joyce Lu.
This hip-hop musical follows the journey of young Norman Lee who, when forced to move from Hong Kong to Brooklyn, must battle with the baddest b-boy crew at school in order to win a place for himself, as well as the heart of slam poet Cindy Chang. Can Norman bring justice to the black-top at Sunset Park High?
Krunk Fu Battle Battle received its world premiere at East West Players. Charlotte Stoudt for the LA Times blog called it a “high-energy hip-hop musical…charged with exuberance, this mash-up of The Karate Kid and Step Up works best as a delivery system for kinetic eye candy.” Hoyt Hilsman for backstage wrote that it is “an entertaining…dance spectacle with an Asian-American twist.”
The production will be performed at Allen Theatre (300 East Bonita Ave., Claremont) from Thursday, April 11 through Saturday, April 13, at 8 p.m., with matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for students, staff, faculty and seniors. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and one hour prior to curtain time. Contact the box office at (909) 607-4375.
