Performance Artist Peterson Toscano Discusses Gay Therapy and Career as a Playwright, Bible Scholar and LGBTQ Advocate, April 24
Performance artist and Bible critic Peterson Toscano will discuss his time in ex-gay therapy and making a career for himself as a playwright, actor, religious studies scholar and LGBTQ advocate, in a special session of the 2013 Pomona College Clark Horowitz Lecture. The event will be held on Thursday, April 24, at 4:15 p.m., in Pomona’s Campus Center (170 E. Sixth St., Claremont), in room 201. A Q&A will follow.
Toscano spent 17 years and over $30,000 on three continents trying to "de-gay" himself. He ultimately came out as gay and has been a vocal witness concerning the potential dangers of what is known as gay conversion therapy or "ex-gay" treatments. In 2007, he organized the Ex-Gay Survivor Conference in Irvine, CA. He is the author of the one person play, "Doin' Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House," and is featured in the award winning documentary film, "This is What Love in Action Looks Like."
As an actor, Toscano performs original one-person comedies, which incorporate Biblical texts, historical events, interviews he has conducted, personal experience and poetry. His performance style incorporates character acting, comedy, storytelling and drama. The stop at Pomona College is part of his Very Grounded, Cross-Country Train Tour, through which he seeks to raise awareness about the growing threat of climate change and seeks to discuss hopeful responses that might help concerned citizens move past fear to a place of loving action.
