"Assignment: China" Documentary Screening at Pomona College Nov. 14

An episode of Assignment China, a behind-the-scenes documentary series about the history of American journalists in China since the 1940s, will be screened at Pomona College on Thursday, November 14 at 7 p.m. in Rose Hills Theatre (Smith Campus Center, 170 E. Sixth St., Claremont). Former CNN Asia correspondent Mike Chinoy—the writer and reporter for the series—will introduce and discuss the film, which is produced by the U.S.-China Institute at USC. Through interviews with journalists and American and Chinese officials, Assignment China examines how 60 years of news coverage has shaped how we know what we know about China.

Chinoy was a foreign correspondent for more than 30 years. After joining CNN’s London bureau in 1983, Chinoy went on to serve as bureau chief in Beijing, where he led award-winning coverage of the Tiananmen Square events. Following his work in Beijing, Chinoy was CNN’s bureau chief in Hong Kong. Among his documentaries are, The South China Sea: Troubled Waters (2010), about the critical importance of that resource-rich region; and Election ’08 and the Challenge of China (2008), about Senator John McCain and then-Senator Barack Obama’s stances on U.S.-China trade, security, environmental and human rights issues. His reporting has won duPont, Peabody and CableAce awards, as well as a silver medal from the New York Film Festival and Asian television awards.

Chinoy is a senior fellow at the U.S.-China Institute at USC and the author of Meltdown: The Inside Story of the North Korean Nuclear Crisis (2008) and China Live: People Power and the Television Revolution (1999).
