It was a bit of a quiet week for Pomona-Pitzer Athletics over the Thanksgiving holiday, with the only action taking place on the hardwood as the Sagehens co-hosted the David Wells Classic this weekend. There was plenty of excitement, though, as the Men's Basketball team won the unofficial tournament championship as the only team with a 2-0 record, while the Women's Basketball team picked up its first win of the year.
The Men's Basketball team opened the David Wells Classic with an 84-75 win over regional rival UC Santa Cruz and then held on for a narrow 57-56 win over Johns Hopkins on Saturday (at CMS). Kyle McAndrews '15 led the way against UC Santa Cruz with a career high 25 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor, while Michael Cohen '15 added 16 points while hitting four three-pointers. Jake Klewer '14 chipped in with 12 rebounds, including an offensive rebound and put back with 1:17 to go to help seal the win.
The Johns Hopkins game had far more drama as the Sagehens built a 12-point lead in the second half, and then held on down the stretch as the Blue Jays came all the way back to a single point. Xavyr Moss PI '13 had 17 points to lead the way for the Sagehens, including Pomona-Pitzer's final three baskets of the game to provide the final margin of victory. His last basket came with 2:30 left to slow down a Johns Hopkins run and give Pomona-Pitzer a 57-52 lead, and the Blue Jays were only able to score a pair of two-point baskets, the last coming with 2.3 seconds left, as their comeback fell short.
Klewer added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Sagehens, while Nick Nordale PI '17 added 12 big points off the bench. Gibson Farone-Collins '16 also had a solid contribution of the bench with nine rebounds in 19 minutes, as well as a three-pointer midway through the second half to stretch the lead to 10 with 8:48 left. Pomona-Pitzer is back in action this week as it opens SCIAC play with a home game against Cal Lutheran on Wednesday before traveling to Caltech on Saturday.
Women's Basketball, meanwhile, earned its first win on Saturday, 57-43 over Arizona Christian, but holding the Firestorm scoreless for a span of 10:35 over both halves, resulting in a 21-0 run that turned a 20-17 deficit into a commanding 38-20 lead. Basha Brulee-Wills PI '17 had a team-high 17 points to lead the way, after also tallying 17 points and 13 rebounds against UC Santa Cruz on Friday and 13 points and 11 rebounds against Linfield on Tuesday. Alaina Woo '17 also got the 21-0 run started with back-to-back three-pointers, the first tying the score 20-20 and the second giving Pomona-Pitzer the lead for good at 23-20. The Sagehens host Cal Lutheran on Thursday and travel to Caltech on Saturday this week.
Swimming and Diving will also be back in action again this week, opening its SCIAC schedule with a home meet against Cal Lutheran on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. The Women's Swimming and Diving team is currently ranked No. 14 nationally by CollegeSwimming.com.
