Edison International Awards $25,000 to Pomona College to Support STEM Students
Edison International, parent company of Southern California Edison (SCE), has awarded a $25,000 grant to Pomona College to support the Investing in Future Scientists through STEM Scholarship Support program. This grant will help fund studies for five students who have financial need and are interested in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
“This gift from Edison International helps us expand support and ensure that these students have the support and resources required to excel in STEM fields,” says Associate Dean and Professor of Biology, Jonathan Wright.
“Since 2009, Edison International has given almost $45 million to education programs that help students excel in STEM. Our philosophy of giving is that all people should have opportunities to do well. For that reason, we partner with organizations that promote the inclusion of minority, low-income and underrepresented students in the STEM fields,” says Tammy Tumbling, director of philanthropy and community at SCE.
Pomona College is investing in several initiatives to strengthen support for low-income and underrepresented students interested in STEM majors. The College established the Quantitative Skills Center in 2012 and launched the Pomona Science Scholars program last year. In summer 2013, the College admitted the first cohort of students into the new one-month, pre-freshman High Achievement Program (HAP), providing lab research and instructional support, supported by the 5C collaborative Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) grant. The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) provides additional opportunities for long-term, focused research.
The National Science Foundation’s survey of earned doctorates over 2002-11 ranks Pomona College 12th among baccalaureate institutions as a source of PhDs in the sciences. Over the same period, there were 323 Pomona College alumni that earned doctorates or were enrolled in PhD programs in the sciences.
