This week in Pomona-Pitzer Athletics saw the Men's Basketball team win its big rivalry game with CMS in front of the usual capacity crowd at Voelkel Gymnasium, while Alex Lincoln '14 of the Women's Swimming and Diving team celebrated her Senior Day with a memorable final swim at Haldeman Pool.

The annual CMS game at Pomona-Pitzer filled the stands at Voelkel and the game did not disappoint. The Sagehens took a 30-27 lead into halftime on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Kyle McAndrews ‘15, and the second half saw both teams go back and forth for the first 10 minutes. Pomona-Pitzer, though, was the team that finally put together the big spurt to take control with a 10-0 run to go ahead 53-45 with six minutes left, as McAndrews scored eight of the 10 points on a variety of tough shots.

CMS kept battling back, though, and John Weiss '14 twice stepped up with big jumpers to stop the Stag momentum. The first game with the Sagehens having the ball out of bounds on the baseline with just three seconds on the shot clock, but Weiss was able to hit a contested 20-footer to push the lead back to eight. Down the stretch, Weiss also hit both ends of two one-and-ones at the foul line to seal the win.

McAndrews finished with a game-high 18 points, shooting 6-8 from the floor over the final 15 minutes after a slow start. Weiss added 14 points, while Gibson Farone-Collins '16 added 10 big points off the bench on 5-8 shooting. Michael Cohen '15 also helped get the Sagehens jump-started with 11 first-half points. Men's Basketball also defeated Whittier 81-76 on Wednesday, as McAndrews had 22 points and Weiss added 12. Adrian Brandon PI '15 and Nick Nordale PI '17 chipped in with 14 big points apiece as Cohen missed the game with an injury.

Women's Basketball split the week, defeating Whittier 83-60 and falling to CMS 63-48. Jenn Okonkwo '16 had a huge week, setting new career highs with 28 points and 18 rebounds in the win over Whittier and then adding 19 points and eight boards in the loss to CMS.

The Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams fell to CMS on Saturday in a battle of SCIAC unbeaten, but the final event of the day provided a big highlight. Lincoln, who holds seven school records (three individual, four relay), had her final swim at Haldeman Pool as she swam the final leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, entering the pool a full body length behind her opponent. She rallied from behind and edged out the CMS relay team for a thrilling win in her final home race. To view her swim, click here for a link to our Facebook page.

Women's Lacrosse opened its season with a commanding 14-4 win over Whittier, jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. Rebecca Long '17 had three goals in her college debut, while Jana London PI '14 had four goals and two assists. Gaby Fukumura '17 got the win in goal in her first collegiate start, making five saves. The Sagehens host CMS on Wednesday in a big game after the two teams played three thrillers last season, with Pomona-Pitzer winning twice in overtime (once in the SCIAC Tournament).

Baseball got its spring season underway and went 1-3 over the four games, taking one of three against Whitworth and falling to Emory in the weekend finale. Some newcomers had some big highlights, though, as Michael Caldwell '17 hit a grand slam to key a 6-5 win against Whitworth, while David Gerics '17 threw seven strong innings to get the win in his collegiate debut. Jackson Badger PI '14 also had a big weekend at the plate, going 6-for-11 with six RBI, five of which came in one game (an 11-9 defeat to Whitworth). Baseball also hosts CMS this week on Saturday for a SCIAC doubleheader after crossing the street to face the Stags in a single game on Friday.

Men's and Women's Track and Field start their seasons at home on Saturday for the annual Pomona-Pitzer All Comers Meet, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Men's Tennis (at UC Santa Cruz) and Women's Golf (vs. CMS) had their season openers last week postponed due to weather. The Men's and Women's Golf teams both open this week, while Men's Tennis will open next Thursday at home against Bates.
