This week in Pomona-Pitzer Athletics saw the Women's Water Polo team improve to 6-2 on the young season with a pair of dramatic wins at the Cal Baptist Lancer Invite, while the Baseball team took two of three from CMS to win its first SCIAC series of the year.

Women's Water Polo continued its strong start to the 2014 season by winning its final three matches of the weekend after falling to Cal Baptist in the opener. The Sagehens edged Azusa Pacific 11-10 on Friday on a tie-breaking goal from Sarah Westcott ‘15, her fifth of the match, with just 1:19 remaining in regulation. The Sagehens then defeated Fresno Pacific 10-6 on Saturday after pulling away late, and edged SCIAC rival Redlands in a non-league match 9-8 in overtime, with Alyssa Woodward PI '15 scoring the eventual game-winner in the second overtime, her fifth of the match.  Pomona-Pitzer is now 6-2 on the year, with four of the wins decided by just one goal.

Women's Lacrosse started out the week with an 11-9 home win over CMS, as Jana London PI '15 scored four goals and Rebecca Long '17 added three. The Sagehens have now won three of the last four against the Athenas, including two of three a year ago (both in overtime). The win set up a matchup at Occidental on Saturday between two teams tied for first at 2-0 in the SCIAC, and the Tigers prevailed with a narrow 8-7 win in overtime. Emlyn Foxen '16 tied the game with less than a minute left in regulation, while Ally McLaughlin '16 led the Sagehens with two goals and an assist. Gaby Fukumura '17 added 10 saves in the loss for Pomona-Pitzer, which travels to Chapman on Wednesday and hosts defending SCIAC champion Redlands on Saturday.

Baseball opened its SCIAC season with a three-game set against CMS and took two out of three, with all three games closely contested. The Sagehens won the first game at CMS 4-3, as Jake Bruml '15 threw seven shutout innings to get the win, and Kevin Kannappan '16 came on in relief to get the save. After the Stags won the first of two at Alumni Field 11-7 in 10 innings, the Sagehens took the nightcap 5-3 to win the series. Lane Miles '17 earned his first collegiate win with seven strong innings, allowing only a first-inning two-run homer and Kannappan picked up his second save of the weekend with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Tanner Nishioka '17 homered in both ends of the doubleheader, while Bruml homered in the opener and Jackson Badger PI '14 homered and doubled in the nightcap. The Sagehens host defending SCIAC champion Cal Lutheran on Friday and a non-league game with George Fox on Sunday.

Both basketball teams dropped road games at Chapman, with Men's Basketball suffering a tough 55-49 loss and Women's Basketball battling the first-place Panthers close for most of the game before falling 73-64. John Weiss '14 had 10 points on 4-4 shooting for the men, and Jenn Okonkwo '16 had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the women. Both teams travel to La Verne mid-week before hosting Occidental in a doubleheader on Saturday to close out the regular season. Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving will also close out the regular season this weekend at the SCIAC Championships in Commerce, California, hosted by Caltech.

Softball dropped a doubleheader to undefeated Cal Lutheran on Saturday, falling in the opener 5-2 and then dropping the nightcap 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh. Meagan Tokunaga '15 hit a two-run homer to give Pomona-Pitzer a 3-0 lead, and after Cal Lutheran went ahead 5-3, Aryana Yee '16 hit an RBI triple in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-4 and Caitlyn Hynes '14 brought her home with a sacrifice fly to tie it.

Track and Field opened the 2014 season by hosting its annual All Comers Meet. Ailene Nguyen '16 won the long jump to highlight the performance from the women's team (followed by teammates Schuyler Fox '17 and Kaile Sauro '17 in second and third). On the men's side, Paul Messana PI '17 was second in the 1000 meters and Pryor Stroud '15 came in fourth, while Ben Girodias '15 was fourth in the 3000. Men's Golf opened its season on Monday at the SCIAC Preview, with Jordan Cox PI '16 tying for fifth with a 73 to lead the Sagehens to a fourth-place finish out of six teams.

The tennis teams will get their seasons started this week, with Men's Tennis hosting Bates on Thursday and Women's Tennis entertaining Chapman on Friday. Men's Tennis was scheduled to open on Feb. 8 at UC Santa Cruz, but the trip was canceled due to rain.
