Three Big Events Will be Held at Pomona College This Sat., April 5: Annual Powwow, L.A. River Conference and A Cappella Competition
On Saturday, Pomona College will host events discussing the L.A. River, honoring Native American culture and showcasing competitive student a cappella singing.
- “The L.A. River: Past, Present, Future” will explore the river’s history, efforts to reclaim it for the communities lining its banks and the alternate proposals for its future. Speakers include Lewis MacAdams, poet and president of Friends of the L.A. River; historian William Deverell; Mia Lehrer, architect and consultant to the L.A. River Rehabilitation project; and artist Lauren Bon, who has proposed a project for the L.A. River. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Rose Hills Theatre (Smith Campus Center, 170 E. Sixth Street, Claremont). - Native American dancers and powwow drum groups will converge in Claremont for the 2nd Annual Pomona College Powwow: Honoring the Elements. The intertribal gathering will celebrate Native American culture and honor traditions through music and dance, beginning at noon with the Grand Entry on the College’s Hammer Throw Field at the south end of the Pomona College campus. - For the first time Pomona College is hosting the Western A Cappella Semifinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). The After School Specials! from the Claremont Colleges will sing-off against groups from UCLA, UC San Diego, Brigham Young University and others. Winners will advance to the international finals in New York. The performances start at 7 p.m. in Bridges Auditorium (450 N. College Way, Claremont) and tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for children and $15 for Claremont Colleges students. There is a $1.75 servicing fee on all tickets. Tickets can be purchased at www.pomona.edu/bridges, by phone (909-607-1139) or at the box office window, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
