Ballroom Dance and Modern Dance Performances This Weekend
"Soaring" will be performed May 1-4.
There will be plenty of dancing this weekend at Pomona College, with the dance department’s presentation of “Soaring,” a seminal work on the history of modern dance, and the Claremont Colleges Ballroom Dance Company’s “Hollywood Revisited!” performances, a journey through some of the most iconic movies.
“Soaring” performances are Thursday through Saturday, May 1-3 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 4 at 2 p.m., at Seaver Theatre (300 East Bonita Ave., Claremont). First created in 1920 by modern dance pioneers Ruth St. Denis and her protégé Doris Humphrey, “Soaring” explores the wonderful potential of human movement as it relates to moving air, flowing fabric and incandescent light. Dance major Jacob Barrera ’14 and dancer Cassandra Owen ’14 will present original choreographies in modern dancing while guest artist DJ Gray, a veteran Broadway choreographer, will unveil an exciting new tap piece. Prices are $10 for general admission and $5 for students, staff, and seniors. To purchase tickets, call: (909) 607-4375 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org. The Seaver Theatre Box Office is open Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and tickets will be on sale until one hour prior to curtain times. Tickets can also be purchased online at http://theatre.pomona.edu/contact/ticket-information/.
The CCBDC’s “Hollywood Revisited!” performances will feature formation routines and solos in ballroom, Latin and social dancing styles. Tickets are $20 general admission, $10 for faculty, staff, alumni, seniors and children and $5 for students.
