Community Engagement

The community engagement initiatives component of the Center focuses on the work that was largely associated with the Hart Volunteer Center: connecting students to non-profit organizations for episodic volunteer projects, transportation support for students engaged in work with non-profit organizations, fall Alternabreak, connections with Orientation Adventure (OA), and spring Alternabreak.  Community engagement initiatives also encompass the Davis Scholars Awards, a $10,000 grant for a summer project and the Strauss Awards, a $10,000 prize for a junior who will implement a community based project during the senior year.

Funding for Community Projects
Summer and Winter Community Engagement Grants
If you need funding to support a community service project during the summer or winter breaks from college, we encourage you to apply for one of our grants.  The intent of our modest grants is to offset the expense of implementing your project, whether in the states or abroad.  Requests for transportation, housing and honorariums are not eligible.  Be prepared to present your project to the campus community upon your return from break. To apply, follow the instructions on the Community Engagement Grant application and submit it to the Draper Center via email at drapercenter@pomona.edu or bring it to Smith Campus Center 228.

Davis Projects for Peace
Davis Projects began being offered to Pomona students for summer 2010.  For more information see the Davis Scholars website. Davis scholars are offered funds to complete a summer project.

Davis Projects for Peace is an initiative for all students at the Davis United World College Scholars Program schools to design their own grassroots projects for peace that they themselves will implement anywhere in the world during the summer of 2009. Through a competition on over 90 campuses, 100 projects will be selected for funding at $10,000 each.

Pomona's deadline for summer 2010 applications is JANUARY 15, 2010 at 5 p.m. (February 4th for letters of recommendation.)

Kindly submit applications electronically to maria.tucker@pomona.edu and 2 hard copies to Smith Campus Center, Rm 228.
