Outreach
The Institute and the Public
For almost a quarter century the Institute has produced and aired
documentary films and videos. These productions have dramatized the
major issues and relationships of the Pacific Basin, as well as the
growing connections between the United States and other nations of this
region. Without neglecting our services to Pomona and the other colleges
of the Claremont community, we have continued to reach out to television
and theater audiences in the United States and the Asia/Pacific nations.
Educating an international public to the importance of this region has
remained one of our primary goals.
The Pacific Century, the award-winning 10-hour PBS series, along with
its two accompanying books, serves as a telcourse for some 200 colleges
and institutional subscribers. Since its premiere on PBS in 1992, it has
also been continually aired for general TV audiences in the United
States, Canada and other Pacific Basin countries. (Translated versions
exist in Japanese, Chinese and Korean). Working with PBS and cable
channels, as well as Asia/Pacific outlets like Japan's NHK, Korea's KBS
and Australian Broadcasting, we are now engaged in up-dating the series,
and producing an additional segment on China, with program and
archive footage. A separate program on the Asian Enlightenment is in
progress.
In one example of PBI’s outreach efforts, the Institute took the
initiative in 2002 to obtain long-belated government recognition for the
contributions of the Japanese and Japanese-American "senseis" who taught
at the Navy Japanese Language School during World War II. This effort
led to the presentation of the Navy’s highest civilian award,
the Distinguished Public Service Award,
to honor the efforts of these “forgotten patriots” who served their
country loyally during a time of adversity. |
