The Colorado River is well-known for its red rock canyons
and raft-swallowing rapids. South of Hoover Dam, the Colorado calms down and
the silt settles down, leaving the water a brilliant shade of blue. Canoe
adventurers will explore desert and river scenery during three days of paddling
the Colorado.
Longer
and shorter mileage versions of this trip make it accessible to any ability
level. The shorter group will float down Black Rock Canyon; you can stop to
play on the banks and seek out grottos and desert hot springs. The longer group
will float for three days through a remote area of the river, exploring hot
springs and the desert landscape. On the last day, you will shuttle down to
picturesque Topock Gorge, stopping along the way to see Native American
petroglyphs, partake in a few water fights, and of course go swimming. At the
end of the day, all canoers will have opportunities to share stories, play
games, and contribute to group tasks like pitching camp and cooking dinner.
This trip offers the chance for water lovers to sample unique desert beauty and
explore the network of canyons lining the southern Colorado. You must have
basic swimming ability to participate in this trip.
