Tips on Pomona and Claremont Living

Tips on Pomona and Claremont Living

Daytime temperatures in Claremont vary from the low 50s to the low 100s, but nighttime temperatures are often considerably lower than daytime.  For example, an 80-degree day might be followed by an evening with temperatures in the mid-40s.  Periodically there are desert winds which bring hot and very dry air. Although Southern California is in a drought, you will occasionally need to use an umbrella.

Dress on campus varies widely according to individual taste and mood, ranging from shorts and pants to dresses and skirts. It’s a good idea to bring at least one dressy outfit, because there are semi-formal events at least once or twice each semester.  For hot weather, shorts, sundresses, and other cool attire (including swimsuits) are good to have around.  BE SURE TO BRING A COAT & WARM CLOTHES—it can be cold and rainy in the winter.

Intramural Sports
Intramural sports are popular at Pomona.  Bring your glove, basketball, tennis racquet, and anything else you might use.  Some equipment is available through the residence halls and the Rains Athletic Center.

Smith Campus Center
The Smith Campus Center serves as a center of campus life at Pomona.  The Campus Center contains meeting rooms, lounges, two dining facilities, a recreation room, a Bank of America ATM, the Coop Store, a two-hundred seat movie theatre, the student mail service center, and the Edmunds Ballroom, renovated from its original construction in 1937.  The Campus Center also houses the Asian American Resource Center, the Writing Center, the Associated Students of Pomona College (ASPC) office, and the Quantitative Skills Center.  The dining facilities include the Sagehen Cafe and the student-run Coop Fountain.  The Coop Store is the place on campus to purchase your selection of sweatshirts, T-Shirts, hats and other Pomona College memorabilia.  The Coop Store carries school supplies, snacks, health foods, and health and beauty aids. The Campus Center is also a great place to work, offering over 100 student employment opportunities from entry level to student manager positions.
