Reduce Reuse ReCoop

As students move out of their dorms in the spring, students can donate their items to ReCoop. These items are sorted, stored over the summer, and then sold to incoming and returning students in the fall at a discounted price. ReCoop has saved over 15 tons of goods from going into the landfill every year! ReCoop aims to promote responsible living and a culture of reuse within the Pomona College community. This joint venture is overseen by the student workers who run the ReCoop store, the Sustainability Integration Office, the Environmental Affairs Commissioner of the Associated Students of Pomona College (ASPC) Senate, and the Office of Housing and Residential Life.

ReCoop was launched in the spring of 2007. ReCoop pays student workers to stay during the week after Commencement to collect the useful items abandoned or donated by students as they leave for the summer. This effort helps find new homes for these items and also assists the housekeepers, who face the task of cleaning the dorms for summer use.

ReCoop accepts donations of useful items (ranging from costumes to coffee makers, pencils to picture frames). Some materials—like clothing, shoes, and bedding—are given away to local charities and animal shelters. Items that have high re-sale value for the college community (fridges, fans, lamps, rugs, furniture, and other décor) are stored on-campus until the fall for the ReCoop sale. This large sale offers incoming and returning students an opportunity to furnish their rooms inexpensively. The revenue generated from the sale covers the operations ReCoop and supports other on-campus sustainability initiatives.
