Geology Department Annual Field Trip: Mineral King, September 20-22, 2013. Geology students and faculty recently enjoyed the annual Department field trip, heading out to Mineral King in Sequoia National Park. Driving into the mountains, following switchback after switchback, the group was treated to magnificent vistas and close up encounters with enormous Sequoias. The group hiked up through Mineral King Valley, examining the spectacular geology as they went. After spotting a black bear on the trail at lunch the group arrived at the White Chief Mine, where magnificent skarn deposits were examined and collected. Clouds descended in the afternoon and with the onset of rain the group headed back to camp. A cold and rainy night ensued, with some flooding issues with students’ tents. The cold morning (29 degrees) greeted the group with views of freshly powdered mountain peaks. The students’ excellent attitude and enthusiasm really made this a trip to remember.
