The Pomona College Internship Program (PCIP) offers students paid opportunities to intern at various organizations in the greater Los Angeles area.

We are always looking for new organizations to join our long-standing paid internship program. Essentially, we provide the funding for Pomona students to go out in the Los Angeles area organizations and intern. There is no cost to your organization, and you get a dedicated intern(s) for 60-100 hours (they can intern for more than 100 hours but on an unpaid, voluntary basis). The program helps Pomona students gain valuable pre-professional experience and explore career paths, while making meaningful contributions to partnering organizations.

About the Program

PCIP was developed in 1976 and provides students paid experiential learning opportunities during the academic year in the greater Los Angeles area.  This program aims to help students:

  • Develop a better understanding of a professional work environment
  • Enhance their knowledge and awareness about a particular career field and provide networking opportunities
  • Learn how their liberal arts education will apply in a work environment
  • Aid in the process of determining what career to pursue after graduation

In addition, this program helps to alleviate financial barriers that prevent students from doing an unpaid internship by paying students a stipend and providing transportation funding.

How it Works

Students must apply for PCIP every semester. Students go through two application processes: 1) for PCIP and 2) if selected for PCIP, for the sponsoring organization internship. The Career Development Office facilitates the competitive student application process and selects students to participate in PCIP each semester. Once selected, students have the opportunity to apply to positions in Handshake, Pomona College’s online career portal, or submit their own internship proposal to the Career Development Office. The internship interview and selection process is facilitated by each individual organization.

  • Students must work a minimum of 60 hours, but no more than 100 hours throughout the semester. This breaks down to about 6-10 hours per week for 10-13 weeks.
  • Selected students must attend a mandatory New Hire Orientation before they can begin interning. If students do not attend a mandatory New Hire Orientation, they will not be eligible to participate in PCIP.
  • Students are required to complete assignments throughout the semester.
  • Students receive a stipend for an approved PCIP internship to help alleviate financial barriers to participating in unpaid internship opportunities.

In addition to receiving a stipend, students can apply for a transportation subsidy, which will partially cover travel to and from the internship site. Travel funding is based on a rate of one (1) trip per week.

Due to the high-touch nature of PCIP, students’ direct experiences in a work environment and with supervision is crucial and therefore remote opportunities are ineligible for PCIP.

How are Interns Paid?

Interns are paid through their work allotment for the academic year. All students applying to PCIP must have sufficient work allotment to qualify for acceptance.  Interns can be paid for up to 100 hours of work during the semester.
