ITS listened to your comments regarding on-campus wireless service and has spent the summer working hard on significant upgrades. These upgrades should provide increased performance, capacity and reliability on the wireless networks available at Pomona College. While the upgrades are still a work in progress campus-wide, we are happy to announce that all the wireless equipment has now been upgraded in all on-campus Residence Halls, meaning that students should be having an improved wireless experience upon move-in.
The upgrade consists of replacing our previous generation Aruba wireless equipment with next generation 802.11AC wave 2 standard access points. These access points can support up to 200 connected devices per access point (compare that number to the 64 connected devices supported by the previous Aruba access points). We have also added new Cisco wireless controllers. The new controllers are designed and configured to increase reliability and uptime, with the capacity to support 6000 access points with a network throughput of 40GB/s.
This work began with our team going building to building, area to area, all across campus to perform a wireless survey of signal strength and coverage. These surveys helped to build a plan for replacement by identifying the optimal locations for the installation of new access points. Once we identified the locations, we were able to deploy 457 wireless access points in the residence halls in just three weeks.
For best results ITS recommends that you use the following wireless networks:
POMONA – Provides full access to Pomona network resources, including printing. ITS recommends this network for all students, faculty and staff
EDUROAM – Fast, secure Internet access, available across the 7Cs as well as many colleges and universities around the world. This network is perfect for your mobile phone, too.
CLAREMONT-ETC – Internet access for your gaming systems, smart devices, smart speakers, and other non-computing connected devices. Requires a WPA key, which can be found in the ITS Knowledgebase.
POMONA GUEST – Easy Internet access for your relatives and guests.
Students can still take a walk on the wired side – Ethernet is available in the dorms, with one live ethernet jack per bed per room. If you cannot find a live connection in one jack, please try a different one. Note that some rooms may have more than one wallplate and that wallplate may be behind furniture.
And of course, if you have any problems getting connected, please feel free to contact us at the ITS Service Desk at (909) 621-8061 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
