Over the last few years, rapid changes have occurred in the technological landscape at Pomona College. These changes are marked by the rise of technology-rich learning environments on campus which come with an increasing demand for wireless connectivity in and out of the classroom, as well as an increasing desire by students to have a reliable, stable and efficient network.
In order to keep pace with these changes, ITS began a campus-wide wireless upgrade project in 2018. The main goal of this project was to upgrade our wireless access points from the previous generation Aruba equipment to next generation 802.11AC wave 2 equipment. This upgrade has meant that up to 200 devices can connect to each of our new wireless access points, compared to the 64 devices supported by our previous access points. In addition, new Cisco wireless controllers have been installed to increase reliability and uptime.
In total, 1,000 indoor and 90 outdoor access points have been installed to date through the wireless upgrade. During the initial phase, completed in August 2018, ITS upgraded all of the wireless equipment in on-campus Residence Halls. As a result, students enjoyed an improved wireless experience upon move-in. Over the summer, ITS completed the second phase of this project, upgrading all academic and administrative buildings. These changes will be essential in supporting a student-centered, technology-rich learning environment at Pomona College.
The final stage of this project will be to add new wireless access points to outdoor spaces such as athletic fields. These access points will allow students to share their Pomona College experiences, by live streaming games and uploading stats in real-time.
