As a Pomona College community member, you may have access to confidential and sensitive information about students, the college, and even yourself. To add an extra layer of protection for Pomona logins, ITS now provides Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) technology to students, staff, faculty and alumni.
Multi-factor Authentication enhances the security of your account by verifying your identity with a password and second device. This secondary authentication makes it more difficult for someone else to gain access to that information, even if your password has been compromised because the attacker won't have access to your second-factor device.
Once your account is registered with MFA, attempts to access Claremont CAS (Central Authentication Services) systems will require a confirmation of your identity through either an application on your smartphone, text message, or phone call to a registered number. Some of the common Claremont CAS systems used include the portal, Workday, Kronos, Webmail, Sakai.
DUO: MFA for Students, Faculty and Staff
Pomona College Students, Faculty, and Staff can safely access Claremont CAS resources with multi-factor authentication through DUO. Registration is a simple online process that takes just minutes to complete. Once you registered, please follow these setup instructions.
Once setup, the login process is simple. Enter your Pomona College ID and password, as usual, and you will be prompted to confirm your identity through your registered phone via voice, text-message, or push notification to the Duo App (available to download in the Apple Store or Google Play). Once your identity is confirmed, you will gain access to the system.
Similar to many other institutions’ adoptions of Multi-factor Authentication, you have the option to check a “remember me” box, which will bypass the need to use Multi-factor Authentication for subsequent logins for a period of 30 days. If you do not have access to any of the authentication methods that you set up, please call the Pomona College Service Desk at (909) 621-8061 and we can arrange for a temporary code.
Microsoft Azure: MFA for Alumni
Alumni can now safely access their alumni mailbox with multi-factor authentication through Azure MFA, Microsoft’s multi-factor authentication solution. Similar to Duo, Azure MFA helps safeguard access to data and applications while maintaining simplicity for users. When you are prompted to register, please follow these setup instructions provided by Microsoft. You can select from a variety of easy to use authentication methods to provide a second form of identification and we recommend setting up more than one.
Please be aware that some email apps, especially those using IMAP or POP, may not support multi-factor authentication. This lack of support means that once your account is enabled for Azure MFA, your email app may not be able to access your Pomona College mailbox. If you encounter this problem, we recommend switching to a compatible app such as Microsoft Outlook (available for iOS and Android).
Alternatively, you can create an auto-generated password to use with each incompatible app, separate from your normal password. Please note that Microsoft is planning to discontinue support for apps that don’t support MFA in October 2020, so your app will need to be updated by the developer or you will need to switch to an app that does support MFA.
