President Starr's Weekly Update (10/12/22)

Dear Pomona College Community,

This Friday, October 14, marks the momentous day our College was founded in 1887. As we celebrate our history, we also need to look to our future and Pomona’s unique role in promoting opportunity in American higher education. In that spirit, allow me to share a brief video message regarding our current progress and plans for the years ahead.

In recognition of our commitment to community, we will observe our Founders Day with a service project and dinner for students, faculty and staff on Friday.

We are collaborating with the San Gabriel Valley Regional Housing Trust and City Net to prepare hygiene and snack kits for individuals and families in our area who are experiencing homelessness. We hope to assemble 900 kits that will be distributed to both adults and children in the region, and we also are providing a list of items you can donate.

Please join us on Marston Quad beginning at 4 p.m. Staff members from the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments will be on hand to answer questions about regional housing initiatives and provide information about volunteer opportunities.

A catered barbecue dinner starts at 5 p.m. and KSPC will provide the music. Our entire campus community is invited, and faculty and staff members are encouraged to bring their families. Faculty and staff members are requested to RSVP.

This year, Founders Day coincides with the opening of our new Center for Athletics, Recreation and Wellness. With this happy alignment, our communications team has put together a delightful video on the history of Pomona’s athletics facilities, from the rudimentary “woodpecker heaven” that was Renwick Gymnasium to today’s exceptional new center designed to serve our entire community.

On a final note, let me remind everyone that that the official opening day of the new athletics center on Friday wraps up with our women’s volleyball match against Occidental at 7 p.m. in the new Voelkel Gym.

Chirp! Chirp!
