President Starr's Weekly Update (11/29/22)

Dear Pomona College Community,

It’s hard to believe, but we’ve already reached that three-week stretch of the calendar between Thanksgiving and winter break. Before we start looking ahead to 2023, I want to remind everyone of some opportunities on campus as the semester ends.

Campus Opportunities

If you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, the compelling fall art exhibitions from Christina Fernandez, Helen Pashgian ’56 and Kameelah Janan Rasheed ’06 continue into December at our Benton Museum of Art.

A series of semester-end musical performances will include the Pomona College Choir, with Conductor Donna M. Di Grazia; and Giri Kusuma, Pomona’s Balinese gamelan ensemble, with Music Director Nyoman Wenten and Dance Director Nanik Wenten.

Winter sports are under way, with Sixth Street rivalry action this week as the women’s basketball team plays Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 30 in Voelkel Gym and the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams host CMS on Friday (December 2) and Saturday (December 3) at Haldeman Pool.

The last Oldenborg Luncheon Colloquium of the semester is set for December 6, and December 7 will be the final day for the language tables until they resume spring semester.

Future Paths

On the career front, student applications for the Spring 2023 Pomona College Internship Program(PCIP) open December 5.

Over the long winter break, our Career Development Office (open through December 22 then reopening January 4) suggests students consider building their professional networks by using Sagehen Connect – a free platform for the Pomona community, giving current students access to a directory of alumni in a wide range of fields.

For a bit of inspiration, consider the paths of recent graduates such as first-year law student Don Chen ’18, Congressional aide Zachary Freiman ’20 and development manager Anais Gonzalez Nyberg ’20.

Closing Thoughts

We’ve had such a full, active fall. As the end of the semester approaches and students prepare for finals, one way we can look out for one another is by keeping at our COVID-19 public health protocols.

With best wishes,

Gabi
