Admitted Students FAQs

Congratulations! We are so excited to welcome your student and, in turn, your family to the Pomona community. We understand your student may not be passing along all (or, any) of the details about our upcoming Admitted Students Weekend program. We hope to provide answers here to many of the questions we receive from parents about our on-campus programs. Key information is also available in the enrollment packet your student received in the mail.

When should we visit campus?

Our Admitted Students Weekend (ASW) program for students and parents will be held on Sunday, April 19—Monday, April 20, 2020. We encourage all admitted students to try and visit on ASW if possible. We offer a full schedule that includes options for attending classes, student and faculty panels, residence hall tours, a department interest fair and more. Details about the programming and the schedule are available online. Students may register for Admitted Students Weekend through their applicant status portal at destination.pomona.edu. They will need their login information on hand.

Can we attend part of Admitted Students Weekend?

Yes, you can attend part of the weekend program on either April 19 or 20. Just be sure to register and check in to receive information about all of the weekend’s scheduled options. You can participate in events as your schedule allows.

Can my student stay overnight?

We encourage admitted students to visit campus for Admitted Students Weekend (April 19-20), and they are welcome to do an overnight on campus during that event. However, if that weekend will not work, admitted students may stay overnight on campus starting on April 1 and ending on April 16. Overnight visits can be made on Monday through Thursday nights during this period, and admitted students may sign up on the Destination Pomona portal. Please contact Michelle Munoz if your student would like to arrange an overnight but cannot make any of these dates.

We can’t come on Admitted Students Weekend, and an overnight doesn’t work either. Are there other options?

Yes! A Slice of Pomona is a half-day visit opportunity for your student to shadow a current student for class and a meal on campus. This is available during the month of April, either in the morning or afternoon. Students can also sign up to simply ask an admission counselor some questions. They can register through their applicant status portal at destination.pomona.edu and will need their login information on hand.

Anything else?

If you're on campus during a time other than Admitted Students Weekend, your student might find it helpful to sit in on a class or two. Our student government (ASPC) has put together an online tool to help your student search for potential classes, and this can be accessed when you are on campus. The best bet is to search across all departments after selecting the days and times you'll be on campus. On Monday, April 19, during Admitted Students Weekend, visiting students will have the opportunity to attend a class (or two). (Sorry, but parents cannot be accommodated due to our small class sizes.)

Will other things be happening on campus?

So many other things! See a list of campus events that are open to the public.

How can my student get from the airport to campus?

  • Ontario International Airport is served by many major airlines and all major car rental agencies. A cab or shared ride to Claremont takes 20 minutes.
  • From Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), rent a car or take a shared ride to Claremont. The trip may take up to two hours, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
  • Three other airports are within a 45-mile radius of Claremont: Hollywood Burbank Airport in Burbank, John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana and Long Beach Airport.

Other travel info?

Find general information on visiting Pomona College, including information on parking, local accommodations, and getting to campus.

Could we talk to a faculty member or current student about a specific major/activity/sport, etc.?

There will be plenty of opportunities to speak with faculty and current students during Admitted Students Weekend. In addition to interactive panels, parents will have lunch with faculty, and the department fair will feature faculty members who teach in most of Pomona’s majors. If you are not able to get a specific question answered, let an admissions staff member know, and we will try to connect you with someone!

Can we meet with a coach while we are there?

Meeting with a coach is not built into the program, but you may contact the coach in advance to set up a meeting while you are on campus. Contact information may be found on our athletics website.

How can I get my student to relay all of this information to me?

We can’t help you there.

I have more questions!!

Shoot us an email, or give us a call at (909) 621-8134, and we’ll do our best to help.
