Important Public Health Announcements (12/16/20)

Dear Faculty and Staff,

On Monday, we alerted you that we have seen an uptick in the number of positive COVID-19 cases among faculty and staff. At the same time, we seek to contribute to the urgent regional public health effort to contain the spread of virus.

With the holiday break almost here, we have decided to begin our usual paid school closure a few days earlier, in line with wider public health steps we all need to take at this important point in our response to the pandemic.

We are closing the College starting 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18 and will reopen on Monday, Jan. 4. Whether they typically work from campus or remotely, all staff members will be given these days off as an extension of our paid school closure. We ask that you not come to campus unless you have a critical function to perform as approved by your vice president. We will return to work on Monday, Jan. 4.

From Monday, Dec. 21 through Sunday Jan 3, the Hamilton Health Box on-campus clinic will be closed for on-site testing. The Clinic will be available for phone consultations through the winter break. If you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or you are symptomatic, please call the HHB Clinic at 909-607-0616. Alternatively, you can consult with your health care provider. If you do test positive over the break, please do report this immediately to covidsafe@pomona.edu.

After the break, we will continue routine testing of staff who are required to be on campus to perform their jobs.

In line with ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County, we will be taking the next steps in implementing testing procedures for faculty and staff who are in work roles that can be carried out remotely but who plan to come to campus on a routine basis.

Beginning Monday, Jan. 14, all faculty and staff who plan to work on campus routinely must obtain approval from their vice president or dean and must agree to undertake routine COVID-19 testing at the HHB Clinic.

Faculty and staff who work on campus for three days a week or less will be tested once a week; faculty and staff working four days or more on campus will be tested twice weekly. To facilitate this process, faculty and staff with approval to work on campus must commit to a specific work schedule and will be assigned specific times to receive their routine test.

We will provide more details on this new process after the new year, and we recognize there are situations that occasionally arise in areas such as research that do not always fit into a foreseeable routine. We plan to schedule town hall meetings in January to provide more information to the community.

Those faculty and staff members who plan on working on campus will need to follow all public health protocols ,including completing the daily health check.

In addition, Los Angeles County has issued updated public health guidance for higher education mandating face coverings must be worn by any person working in cubicles, including those equipped with partitions, and this order may be extended beyond the current Dec. 20 end point.  If you work in your office with the door open, you must have a mask on. If you work alone in your office with the door closed, you may remove your mask.

Additional public health and campus-related information is available on our Pomona Safe web.

Thank you once again for your cooperation during this challenging period. Please enjoy the extra time off and please continue to follow all public health guidance regarding face coverings, physical distancing and other key safety measures during this unusual period. Please don’t hesitate to reach out at covidsafe@pomona.edu if you have questions.

I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,
