LA County Mask Recommendation (6/29/21)

Dear Pomona College Faculty and Staff,

Yesterday, we announced that, consistent with workplace guidance from the state’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA), members of our community who are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 no longer are required to wear facemasks when on campus. Conversely, members of our community who are not fully vaccinated must continue to wear masks indoors when in proximity to others.

Last night, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released a statement urging everyone, regardless of vaccination status, to wear masks in public spaces indoors to guard against the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19.

More specifically, the Department of Public Health “strongly recommends people wear masks indoors in settings such as grocery or retail stores; theaters and family entertainment centers, and workplaces when you don't know everyone's vaccination status.” DPH goes on to note that “fully vaccinated people appear to be well-protected from infections with Delta variants, however people with only one vaccine dose of Pfizer or Moderna are not as well-protected. The smaller number of COVID-19 infections identified in people who are fully vaccinated have been mild illnesses.”

We urge all members of our community to consider wearing masks in indoor spaces as recommended by the county, (which also notes that fully vaccinated people appear to be well-protected against the Delta variants). We continue to urge all faculty and staff members who haven’t done so, to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and to upload your card as soon as possible.

Thank you for your assistance as our community response evolves with the course of the pandemic. We will provide additional updates as public health guidance changes.
