The Pomona College Departments of Music and Theatre & Dance will present “Evening of Griot Music,” with Gambian master kora player, Alhaji Papa Susso, and Balla Kouyaté from Mali on the balafon. Carleton College Professor of French and Liberal Arts Chérif Keita will introduce them.

The Medieval Empire of Mali once covered most of West Africa and is the source of this region’s musical traditions. This area, known as The Manding or Old Mali, is the fountainhead of several epic songs and narratives, which are carried on by griots, or traditional oral wordsmiths and genealogists like Susso and Kouyaté.

Free to the public, open seating and free parking.
