The Media Studies Department at Pomona Presents: SCHOOLING IN RUINS: GLAUBER ROCHA'S ROME A talk by Ramsey McGlazer, UC Berkeley Shot in Rome during Rocha's excile from Brazil, the film calls for the fall of a Roman empire that, according to Rocha, still persists, not least in Latin America.  McGlazer asks what it means that this call relies on the teaching techniques of  the old school : repetitious lectures, heavy-handed monologues, and frequent recapitulations and returns.  As it makes the surprising case for an anti-colonial old school, Claro demonstrates that a return to the past can enable, rather than rule out, change, or even revolution.
