Jaime Escalante (played by Edward James Olmos) leaves a lucrative corporate tech job to teach computer science in an impoverished East LA barrio. Finding that the school lacks computers, he pivots to teaching basic math but quickly sets a much higher standard. He instills his students with ganas—a Spanish word meaning drive, desire, or the hunger to succeed—and relentlessly coaches a class of remedial students through college-level calculus. —https://www.rogerebert.com
