This trip takes place at one of two lakes in the local Southern California mountains. Your days will be a mix of recreation and relaxation. Some of the activities might include kayaking, day hikes, swimming in the lake, and much more. With a diverse range of activities and scenery, Lake OA provides a perfect backdrop for you to get to know your fellow classmates. Community Engagement Component
Previous Lake OA trips have worked closely with our partners, the Children's Forest. The Children’s Forest is run by/for/with children in the surrounding mountain communities. Their mission is to preserve the forest, in a nutshell. You will learn more during your service day. Due to the bark beetle infestation, the local mountains have lost many Jeffrey Pines and Fir trees. This is due to the drought, our poor water conservation, and the trees’ inability to naturally push sap through the system allowing the larvae to exit when ready to fly off and become assets to the ecosystem. Instead they are trapped in the tree and literally eat it to death, leaving the tree dry and susceptible to fire danger from lightning strikes… which in turn puts many people’s homes and lives in danger. The children of the area now give back by maintaining the campground you are staying at and planting seedlings in place of the lost trees. You get to help out in this cause!
