The Pomona College Department of Physics and Astronomy is hosting NanoDays, a series of four events featuring Pomona students, staff and faculty presenting science activities to local students and community members.

"NanoDays is about harnessing the excitement of cutting-edge nanoscience, which is changing our world, and sharing it with the public in a highly accessible format with a range of hands-on activities designed to engage, inspire and teach young (and young at heart) people about science," says Professor David Tanenbaum, who is organizing the activities.  "The event is similar to a traveling science museum exhibit."

Three of the NanoDays events involve local schools, including visits to Sycamore Elementary School in Claremont and Pomona's Emerson Elementary School and Fremont Academy. Pomona College will host Claremont High School physics students on April 2.

On Saturday, March 30, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Claremont Public Library will host an afternoon of events, with Pomona faculty and students leading the activities. Visitors can explore how 3D images are made, investigate new nano products and materials, and imagine what the world might look like if we could build an elevator to space. Other activities include understanding color, memory metals, microscopy and data storage. A special storytime is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Tanenbaum expects several faculty members to support the program, as well as students, some of whom are physics majors and some of whom learned about nanotech in Tanenbaum's ID1 class  "Nanotechnology in Science and Fiction." 

NanoDays, organized by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network, takes place nationally from March 30-April 7, 2013. NanoDays offers learning experiences for both children and adults to explore "the miniscule world of atoms, molecules, and nanoscale forces. Most NanoDays events, which take place at more than 200 science museums, research centers and universities across the country, combine fun hands-on activities with presentations on current research.

The Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net) is a national community of researchers and informal science educators dedicated to fostering public awareness, engagement, and understanding of nanoscale science, engineering, and technology.
