As part of Pomona College's Oldenborg Speaker Series, German Parliament member Dagmar Freitag will give a presentation on Friday, Oct. 25, at noon in Oldenborg Dining Hall about "International Parliamentary Scholarships (IPS) of the German Bundestag," which are offered to college graduates who possess a strong interest in diplomacy and government.

Since 1986, in concert with the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin, IPS has provided internships for more than 1,600 students from 28 countries, giving them opportunities to learn about the various functions and duties performed by Germany's parliamentary government. In her talk, Freitag will discuss the application requirements, which include knowledge of German. She will be accompanied by Consul General Bernd Fischer and other German representatives.

Freitag joined the Social Democratic Party in 1975 and has been a member of the German parliament since 1994. She chairs the Committee on Sport, is a full member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and a deputy member of the NATO parliamentary assembly and the Joint Committee of Bundesrat and Bundestag.
