The Pomona College Department of Theatre and Dance and Claremont-based professional theatre company Ophelia's Jump will continue their summer play season with The Merry Wives of Windsor and Macbeth, held under the stars at Sontag Greek Theatre on Pomona's campus. The Merry Wives of Windsor performances will be held on July 17, 19, 25 and 27 and Macbeth will be performed on July 18, 20, 24 and 26. All performances begin at 8 p.m.
In The Merry Wives of Windsor, two married women and their money are pursued by the rotund and rambunctious Falstaff. But the ladies see right through his plots, and form a few of their own. Mischief and hysteria follow, with lovers and lechers chasing after what they truly desire.
In Macbeth, Macbeth is spurred by a visit from three sinister but seductive women, who hail him as the highest ruler in the country, a title he knows he does not hold—yet. Shamelessly pressed by his ambitious wife, Macbeth leaves a bloody path in his wake as he charges for the throne, leaving the question asked: what, or who, is worth the price of power?
In this partnership between the College and Ophelia's Jump, the company provides internships with students participating as performers and technicians, and master classes and workshops for Claremont Colleges students and area residents. Veteran actor, director and teacher Beatrice Casagran PI '86 and actor and improv comedian Caitlin Lopez founded Ophelia's Jump, which was voted "Best Theatre Company" by Inland Empire Weekly readers last year.
Tickets are $25 general admission and $22 for students and seniors, and can be purchased online at www.opheliasjump.org. Sontag Greek Theatre is located at 300 E. Bonita Ave., Claremont. Guests are welcome to bring picnics. Special events featuring local artisans, musicians, medieval combat demonstrations, and the Shakespeare improv group The Mechanicals will begin at 6 p.m. prior to the Saturday and Sunday performances.
