The Faculty Alumni Service Award honors faculty "in recognition of exemplary service to the alumni association over a period of years." This year, the award honors the William Polk Russell Professor of Mathematics Shahriar Shahriari.
In his 26 years at Pomona College, Shahriari has dedicated an uncommon amount of time, effort and personal mentorship to the alumni community. Shahriari has participated in Pomona in the City regional events across the country and attended numerous alumni events throughout the Daring Minds campaign. He also moderates the Pomona College Mathematics Alumni group on LinkedIn, a particularly well-engaged online network of 475 alumni, faculty and declared majors. The original Posse mentor at Pomona in 2005, Shahriari remains a devoted adviser to the first nine Posse students as they have gone on to postgraduate study and careers. He has also lent his voice and advocacy to fundraising programs that encourage alumni to support the College’s commitments to affordability and educational excellence.
Shahriari received the Wig Distinguished Professor Award for Excellence in Teaching four times, every year he was eligible with the exception of associate dean and sabbatical stints. He published the materials for his honors calculus class as a textbook, titled Approximately Calculus, which won the American Library Association's Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Title in 2007. And in 2015, he was awarded the Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for Distinguished Teaching of Mathematics, widely considered the top national prize for teaching mathematics.
