Pomona College President G. Gabrielle Starr and President Emeritus David Oxtoby have joined higher education leaders in the recently launched Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, a collective effort to improve how colleges and universities address immigration-related matters affecting their campuses.
The Alliance will support adoption of best practices on campuses, and work in a unified manner to communicate the need for federal and state policies that create a welcoming environment for immigrant, undocumented, and international students.
“For years, Pomona College has welcomed and supported undocumented and DACA students,” says President Starr. “We are proud to join the Presidents’ Alliance, with the goal of working together to bring positive and lasting legislative solutions for immigrant and DACA students as well as for international students and scholars.”
Led by a steering committee, the Alliance group includes presidents and chancellors Nancy Cantor, Rutgers University-Newark, NJ, Noelle Cockett, President, Utah State University, UT, John J. DeGioia, Georgetown University, D.C., Dorothy Leland, University of California at Merced, David Oxtoby, President Emeritus, Pomona College, Eduardo Padrón, Miami Dade College, FL, and Timothy White, The California State University system.
“With the urgent threat that DACA recipients are currently facing, the Alliance and our member presidents’ first undertaking will be to urge Congress to protect Dreamers with permanent legislation as soon as possible,” says President Emeritus Oxtoby, who previously initiated a letter signed by more more than 700 college and university leaders urging Congress to protect DACA recipients.
