Pomona College Professor of Mathematics Stephan Ramon Garcia has been named a 2019 fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) for contributions to operator theory and leadership in undergraduate research and mentoring.
"This recognition is significant because it's an award that predominantly goes to faculty at big research institutions, so it's a good stamp to have received from the research world at large," says Garcia, W.M. Keck Distinguished Service Professor.
"There's something to be said for hard work and perseverance. It's sometimes easy to feel that you're far behind fellow students or colleagues who seem to be going faster or are better prepared than you. A steady pace pays off," says Garcia, who says that as a graduate student at UC Berkeley, he could never have imagined receiving such an honor today.
Garcia joined Pomona College’s Mathematics Department in 2006 and is the author of four books and more than 80 research articles, many with undergraduate authors. His upcoming book, 100 Years of Math Milestones: The Pi Mu Epsilon Centennial Collection, is expected in 2019.
Garcia works in operator theory, complex variables, matrix analysis, number theory and discrete geometry. He serves on the editorial board of several well-known journals and has received four National Science Foundation (NSF) grants as principal investigator.
Garcia is one of 65 mathematical scientists from around the world to receive this appointment for 2019, the program's seventh year. The Fellows of the AMS designation recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication and utilization of mathematics.
"This year's class of AMS Fellows has been selected from a large and deep pool of superb candidates. It is my pleasure and honor as AMS President to congratulate the new fellows for their diverse contributions to the mathematical sciences and to the mathematics profession," says AMS President Kenneth A. Ribet.
Founded in 1888, the AMS is dedicated to advancing research and connecting the diverse global mathematical community through their publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs.
Garcia is the third Pomona College faculty member to be named a fellow of the AMS. Professor Ami Radunskaya was appointed in 2017 and Professor Erica Flapan in 2013.
