Pomona College’s Department of Music announces its fall 2019 concert season featuring an eclectic offering of music from yesterday to today, offering a wide range of genres and musical languages. This semester the department welcomes to Bridges Hall of Music members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic – principal cellist Robert deMaine and violinist Jin-Shan Dai; members of the Los Angeles-based ensemble Brightwork newmusic; and Vox Luminis – the acclaimed early music vocal ensemble from Belgium. The semester’s offerings will be rounded out with performances by Pomona College’s esteemed faculty artists and student ensembles.

Celliola (Cynthia Fogg, viola, and Tom Flaherty, cello) and Friends kicks off the season on Sept. 15 with works by living American composers and featuring the world premiere of Tom Flaherty’s Cello Concerto commissioned by deMaine, as well as premieres by Karl Kohn and Jack Van Zandt. Rounding out the month Dai joins pianist Jennie Jung in a program with music by Janáček, Ravel and Strauss on Sept. 29.

October features the Pomona College Orchestra joined by faculty guitarist Jack Sanders in concerts on Oct. 11 and Oct. 13. The acclaimed 10-voice Vox Luminis (with continuo), hailed by Gramophone for their “profound, rewarding, and intoxicating” performances, brings their program The Bach Dynasty, to campus on Oct. 26.

November’s highlights include a program of music by Andriessen, Monk and Reich with combined forces from Brightwork newmusic and music faculty members on Nov. 1. On Nov. 3, soprano Ursula Kleinecke and fellow faculty members unite for a program entitled “Women’s Stories” with music by Harbison, Walker and others. On Nov. 10, faculty members Rachel Rudich (flute), Sanders and Gayle Blankenburg (piano) offer a program of “Music by Karl Kohn.”

Wrapping up the semester, December offers concerts with music from around the globe performed by student ensembles including the Balinese Gamelan and Ghanaian Music and Dance ensembles as well as the popular Pomona College Choir.

Also on the schedule are performances by Pomona College faculty artists as part of the Friday at Noon series co-sponsored with Scripps College.  More information is available at: pomona.edu/academics/departments/music/concert-calendar/friday-noon-concert-series.
