Sontag Greek Theatre

Ophelia’s Jump Productions and Pomona College present their annual Midsummer Shakespeare Festival with The Taming of the Shrew and The Adventures of Pericles, Prince of Tyre from July 11-21, 2019 at the Sontag Greek Theatre. New to the festival, OJP Summer Shakespeare Camp participants will also perform Macbeth, Mostly, Shakespeare re-interpreted and adapted by kids on two nights.

About The Taming of the Shrew

Baptista has two daughters.  One of them is very popular and has men, young and old, lined up to marry her.  Being an old fashioned gentleman, Baptista insists that someone has to step up and marry his older daughter, Katherina, first.  Unfortunately, Katherina does not agree and refuses to play nice.  Enter bad boy Petruchio. He is looking for a rich wife and offers to “tame” Katherina. Baptista agrees and the battle begins. Set in modern day, OJP’s high energy production features an all-female cast playing both male and female roles.  With dynamic fight choreography and no-holds-barred tomfoolery this production gives a fresh 21st century twist to Shakespeare’s ode to the patriarchy because, after all, shrews don’t need to be tamed.

The production will take place under the stars at the beautiful Sontag Greek Theatre, an outdoor amphitheater originally built in 1910 and renovated in 1997. The productions will be performed in repertory, alternating each night.

Festival Information

Now a Claremont tradition, the Midsummer Shakespeare Festival artfully presents tragedy and comedy under the stars in a beautiful outdoor setting. Each performance opens nightly with a 40-minute Green Show - an entertaining prelude to the evening’s main performance.  We invite you to bring your own picnic and don’t forget a small blanket or cushion for added comfort. Beer, wine, soft drinks, water and snacks will be available for purchase.

On Saturdays, arrive early and enjoy local musicians, artists and crafts before settling in for an evening of timeless Shakespearean classics. Enjoy festival booths, crafts, and vendors starting at 5:30 p.m. Local restaurants and businesses will be offering special in-restaurant dining menus and selected take-out options to enjoy prior to all performances.
