FDA Approval of Pfizer Vaccine (8/23/21)

Dear Faculty and Staff,

As you may have seen in news reports, the Food and Drug Administration today announced full approval of the Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19, meaning it is no longer under an emergency use authorization.

Our vaccination mandate for staff and faculty, put in place this summer,  allowed faculty and staff to elect to defer compliance with the vaccine requirement until 30 days after the FDA fully approved one of the three vaccines in use in the U.S. Today's approval means the small number of faculty and staff who elected to defer now have until Wednesday, Sept. 22 to provide proof of being fully vaccinated. HR will reach out to those who deferred to remind them of this requirement and the associated deadline.

Our policy also allows faculty and staff to seek exemptions from the requirement for valid medical reasons or deeply held religious beliefs.  We are reviewing the requests for medical and religious exemptions now and HR will contact those individuals with next steps.

Any faculty and staff member who is not vaccinated, essentially those with approved exemptions or deferrals, must be tested for COVID-19 two times per week. Please contact Nurse  Stephanie.Garcia-Barragan@pomona.edu if you need to schedule regular testing.

With more than 90 percent of our staff and faculty now fully vaccinated, we have made great progress together. Let's keep moving forward to support safety and our academic mission.

Best,
