Dear Pomona College Community,
With our region making continued progress with vaccination and phased reopening, we are writing to provide an update on plans for the months ahead, including a limited campus population in summer and the full return of students for fall semester.
As we move forward, the staff members who have not yet returned from full or partial furloughs will be brought back to work in a phased return starting in early June, with all employees back by July 1. We are grateful for the patience and commitment of these community members during this extraordinary crisis. Employees with questions should reach out to their supervisor or the Human Resources Office.
Limited Campus Population for Summer
While most summer research and work opportunities will be remote, we will have a limited population of students living and/or working on campus for jobs or hands-on research and creative opportunities that are directly sponsored by faculty or by staff supervisors.
On-campus research and creative production opportunities will be available with some members of the faculty and will utilize Pomona’s academic facilities.
Students who secure non-research, full-time jobs that must be performed on-campus also will be eligible to live in the Pomona residence halls. Examples include resident assistants and campus tour guides. The residential program for students doing on-campus research and work will begin July 6. Faculty and staff supervisors will discuss housing options with the student and notify housing and residence life staff, who will then provide the student a link to the housing application.
Students do not have to live on campus to participate in these summer options. Those who wish to work or do research on-campus while living off-campus can begin work June 7.
All students working or living on campus this summer will be required to participate in twice-weekly COVID-19 testing.
For additional information on move-in dates, housing costs, travel quarantine and COVID-19 testing requirements and other items, please see our summer FAQ.
Additional Activities this Summer
The Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College will be open by reservation for Pomona students, faculty and staff starting May 1. Some outdoor recreational facilities are available for Pomona students, faculty and staff and they can make reservations to use facilities such as Haldeman Pool, the Pauley Tennis Complex, Rogers Tennis Courts and Strehle Track. For more details on guidelines and how to use the reservation app, visit the Sagehen Athletics website.
Pandemic-related Assistance for Students
Qualifying students will receive additional financial relief made possible by Congress authorizing Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF) late last year.
Pomona College plans to disburse these funds in mid-May to students who meet criteria which include having a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2020/21 academic year on file with the Financial Aid Office as well as having been enrolled at Pomona on Sept. 5, 2020 and/or Feb. 9, 2021. Full information can be found in our FAQ.
To promote safety for all, we urge everyone to get vaccinated for COVID-19 as soon as they are eligible. Student Health Services has been receiving vaccine supplies intermittently at this point and we urge everyone not to wait for that one path to vaccination if they have other options available. In coming weeks, students who have been vaccinated will be asked to start uploading their vaccination record into The Claremont Colleges’ Student Health Services system. All students will need to be vaccinated (with exemptions for documented medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs), and additional information will be sent out in the days ahead.
Looking to Fall
Beyond the limited campus population we are expecting this summer, we are preparing and planning for the full return of students in fall, with on-campus living and in-person classes. Aug. 30 will mark the start of classes and additional information on arrival schedules, move-in and other fall semester details will be sent out in the weeks ahead.
