Coral Vita co-founder Gator Halpern ’12 has been named one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs for 2018. Halpern shares the distinction with Coral Vita co-founder Sam Teicher. Passionate about developing projects that can help create a better harmony between society and nature, Halpern was heavily influenced by his childhood near the ocean in San Diego, Calif.

Uncertainty and Sorrow: The Unexplored Japanese Response to the Pearl Harbor Attack
Today marks the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor— familiar history to most Americans, but Professor Samuel Yamashita has spent years researching aspects of that fateful day that few in the U.S. have ever learned about. Poring over records and personal diaries, Yamashita chronicles how ordinary Japanese responded to news of the attack, not only through mass, orchestrated gatherings but also in individual reflections. While “nearly everyone reacted enthusiastically,” Yamashita discovered exceptions that belie the notion of a monolithic response in Japan to news of war.

The Many Internships of Autumn Martin, a Junior With Her Eye on the Prize
As a teenager, Autumn Martin ’19 had to venture out on her own due to a difficult family situation. As a high school student, she juggled classes, varsity basketball and a nearly full-time job to help sustain herself and her family, all the while maintaining the high G.P.A. that would get her into Pomona. A rock-climbing injury that left her in a wheelchair didn’t hold her back. Instead it piqued her interest in medical health policy and local politics.

Performances in October include: Song and Dance for cello quartet (Maggie Parkins, Maggie Edmonson, Roger Lebow and Tom Flaherty) at Los Angeles Violoncello Society, in Santa Monica on Oct. 22; Glass for solo cello by Tom Flaherty at Los Angeles Violoncello Society in Santa Monica on Oct. 22; Aftermath for solo violin by Rachel Huang, at Boone Hall in Claremont, on Oct. 29.
Thomas Leabhart, professor of theatre and resident artist, published an article titled “Les leçons de Prague: tout est dans le phrasé” in an issue of Degrés titled L’interdisciplinarité entre recherche et création, no. 171-172.
Frances Pohl, Dr. Mary Ann Vanderzyl Reynolds '56 Professor of Humanities and professor of art history, presented “The Visual Politics of Labor: Ben Shahn and the Congress of Industrial Organizations, 1937-1947,” at Snite Museum of Art, University of Notre Dame, in conjunction with an exhibition of Ben Shahn posters for the Political Action Committee of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, created for the 1944 presidential campaign and the 1946 congressional elections.
