TRANSCRIPT: June 24, 2020 MID-WEEK MUSICAL INTERLUDES #8 Hi, my name is Melissa Givens, Assistant Professor of Music at Pomona College in Claremont, California, and I'd like to welcome you to “Mid-Week Musical Interludes,” our podcast series featuring an array of glorious new and not-so-new works as recently performed by faculty, guests and students of Pomona College. For more information on the music from our podcasts please visit us at pomona.edu/musicpodcast, and music podcast is all one word. Today’s podcast once again features the Pomona College Choir and Orchestra. The fourth movement of Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem opens our episode. “Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen,” (“How lovely are Thy dwelling places”) is from a Spring 2016 performance. We then close with two selections from Part 2 of Mendelssohn’s beloved oratorio, Elijah, recorded in Spring 2017, “Behold, God the Lord passèd by,” is followed by “And then shall your light.” Eric Lindholm conducts the ensembles and Donna M. Di Grazia prepared the choral forces. [Excerpt from Brahms, Ein deutsches Requiem IV. [Two excerpts from Part II, Mendelssohn, Elijah] Behold, God the Lord passed by! And a mighty wind rent the mountains around, break in pieces the rocks, break them before the Lord. But yet the Lord was not in the tempest! Behold, God the Lord passed by! And the sea was upheaved, and the earth was shaken. But yet the Lord was not in the earthquake! And after the earthquake there came a fire. But yet the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there came a still small voice, and in that still voice onward came the Lord. And then, then shall your light break forth as the light of morning breaketh, and your health shall speedily spring forth then; and the glory of the Lord ever shall reward you. Lord our Creator, how excellent Thy name is in all the nations! Thou fillest the heaven with Thy glory. Amen! ___________________________________________________________ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE PODCAST, including text translations: The Music featured in this podcast was recorded in Mabel Shaw Bridges Hall of Music located on the campus of Pomona College, 150 E.
