Student Health and Safety

The health and safety of students are priorities at Pomona College. The Office of Student Affairs maintains close relations with the staffs of special support services, including the Student Health Service, the Monsour Counseling Center, and Campus Safety. The Health Education Outreach Office at The Claremont Colleges also provides leadership in health education through student programming, as well as training all Resident Advisors in emergency procedures

The Student Health Service, located in the Student Services Center, is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from l p.m. to 5 p.m. during the school year. Among its services, it provides health education, gynecological and contraceptive consultation, minor outpatient surgery, blood tests, X-rays, electrocardiograms, and allergy shots. After hours, on weekends and in emergencies, students may contact their RA, Campus Safety, or one of the two hospitals listed above. Student Health Services has a medical provider on-call after business hours, available through Campus Safety, 909 607-2000.

Every student should be covered by some form of medical insurance. Proof of insurance is required for all students. Students can either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) of The Claremont Colleges or waive out if they carry comparable alternative insurance (enrollment/waiver forms will be required each year). The SHIP plan covers medical expenses off campus, such as hospitalization, surgery, and accidental injury. Information about the policy can be obtained through the Office of Student Affairs or at the SHIP website.

Safe Escorts

After dark, it is always advisable to walk with someone else. Although there may be a brief waiting period, Campus Safety Officers provide escort services on a priority call basis and are available 24 hours a day. Contact them at ext. 72000.

Campus Safety

The Department of Campus Safety of The Claremont Colleges protects the persons and property of students, faculty, staff and visitors to The Claremont Colleges consortium, assisting law enforcement and other emergency service providers as needed, by being the first responder to emergencies of any kind. We also provide around-the-clock escort service on campus to anyone, as needed.

On-Call Dean

Pomona College has an on-call administrator 24 hours a day, seven days a week, who can be reached by calling Campus Safety at (909) 607-2000 (or x72000 from a campus phone) or filling out our online form. The On-Call Dean is often one of the first responders to calls from Campus Safety about any student situation, troubling behavior, or crisis.

The On-Call Dean determines the appropriate steps given the situation and keeps a detailed record on the interaction and intervention. The On-Call team serves as the primary resource for managing referrals and student issues and follows up with the call.

Counseling Services

The Monsour Counseling Center is the counseling and mental health resource for all seven of The Claremont Colleges. Services are available to any enrolled student at no charge. All counseling services are provided confidentially. Services include short-term therapy, group counseling, crisis intervention, consultation and structured workshops.

Drug and Alcohol Counselor

Pomona College's Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Jasa Cocke, maintains office hours five days a week in Wig Hall A-108.  Call or email for specific availability. Services include individual confidential counseling, crisis intervention, assessment and referral, as well as resource information.  Students are referred by a variety of staff members, or you may simply contact Jasa Cocke directly at 909 607-8763 (78763 from a campus phone).
