Dear Members of the Pomona College Community,

This morning, we learned from the Office of Civil Rights of the US Department of Education, that they received a complaint against Pomona College related to Title IX. This places Pomona on the list of 144 institutions for which the Office of Civil Rights has received complaints and opened investigations related to Title IX.

The complaint received by the Office of Civil Rights alleges the following: “The College fails to promptly and equitably respond to sexual violence complaints, reports and/or other incidents of which it has notice, and (T)he College’s failure to provide a prompt and equitable response to notice of sexual violence allows students to be subjected to a hostile environment on the basis of sex.” No further details about the complaint were provided.

We are fully committed to working with the Office of Civil Rights as we share the same goal: preventing and eliminating sexual violence in all forms.  Our community has been working together for years to address this issue through ongoing education, prevention, support and enforcement programs, and identifying new ways to improve the College’s response to sexual violence (to learn more, visit www.pomona.edu/students/sexual-assault).

We will provide the community additional updates as we learn more.  We will also continue our campus conversations on our policies and practices.  Please contact Dean Mooko, Associate Dean and Title IX Coordinator, or me if you have any additional questions or concerns.
