Vera Berger ’23, Rohan Lopez ’23, and Gabe Udell ’21 Awarded GRFP

Three majors in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics were awarded the Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation for 2023 (NSF GRFP).

Vera Berger ’23 in Physics and Astronomy - Astronomy and Astrophysics. Vera is currently a double major in Math and Physics; she is also ASPC president. She was recently awarded the Churchill Scholarship.


Rohan Lopez ’23 in Physics and Astronomy - Plasma Physics. Rohan is currently a double major in Math and Physics; he is also co-founder of the 5C Chapter of the National Society of Black Physicists.


Gabe Udell ’21 in Mathematical Sciences - Algebra, Number Theory, and Combinatorics. Gabe graduated from Pomona in 2021, and is currently a doctoral student in Mathematics at Cornell University.


According to the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP): “The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. […] The GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who have demonstrated the potential to be high achieving scientists and engineers, early in their careers. […] The five-year fellowship provides three years of financial support inclusive of an annual stipend of $37,000.” Of the 2554 awardees nationwide for 2023, 11 list Pomona College as their baccalaureate institution.
