Hello All Incoming Students!
I hope you all are having amazing and restful summers, because this fall is going to be super exciting! WOO! I am thrilled and honored to meet all of you, but until then, I want to formally introduce myself. My name is Ashley Land, I am from Chicago, IL, I am a senior, a Media Studies Major, and I will be your Quest Scholars at Pomona President for this upcoming school year. I am so thrilled to be serving you all for the 2015-2016 school year and want you all to always remember that I am here for whatever you need, literally call me, beep me, Facebook me, even email me if you want to reach me.
For those of you who don't know about Quest, it is literally the best organization on campus (I'm just saying). Quest serves as an awesome support system and network for all of Pomona's low-income and/or first-generation students and allies. We aim to stimulate conversation, provide support, and create memorable experiences for all of our chapter members, which happens to be a little over 10% of our school's student body! Throughout the year, our chapter hosts several dinners and excursions to help foster bonds within our organization, as well as more future-oriented events like financial literacy workshops and internship search and networking gatherings. We also have a robust student run leadership structure and a comprehensive mentoring program that will be there every step of the way to help you create the most out of your first-year experience.
Quest holds a dear place in my heart because it is where I learned that the obstacles I faced do not make me the person I am, rather, it's how I overcame my obstacles that really shows my true character. Each Quest Scholar in our chapter has their own unique perspective, as well as their own set of problems they have had to face, but what I think is so cool about Questies (Quest Scholars for short) is that we have endless supplies of resilience, motivation, and humility. As I always like to say, "Some may like to call Questies poor economically, but we are rich in determination, intelligence, and compassion."
In conclusion (but really this is just the beginning), I would like to congratulate you all because you have all accomplished something that not many in the nation get to do. You will be attending college, and not just any college--Pomona is one of the most elite and prestigious colleges in the nation. Some of you are the first in your family to go to college. Some of you never thought that college was an option because you had no idea how you were going to pay for it. I know how many of you feel because I was and am still that student who is the first in her immediate family to be graduating from college. I am also still that student who struggles with money daily. What I can tell you is that Pomona is going to be the place where you to realize how awesome you truly are, with people who are going to support you in every regard. You all are fighters and survivors and I want you to always remember that.
See you all very soon and welcome to the Sagehen Family! (chirp chirp!)
