Cultural Communities and Mentor Programs

The first step to being in allyship with the LGBTQIA+ communities is to learn more. It can be challenging for the LGBTQIA+ communities to carry the burden of educating others about their lived experiences. This self-directed and in-person learning will build upon your understanding and education on the expansiveness of gender and sexual identities and help you understand some of the experiences that our diverse LGBTQIA+ communities face throughout their lives. We hope that after this workshop, you'll be able to better support LGBTQIA+ communities and strengthen your allyship and advocacy to help create a safer, more compassionate, and just world.

This session will engage participants in understanding their own socialization of gender, gender norms, and identify how to best support people who are gender diverse. We will cover the purpose of pronouns, prefix in referring to people, gender-inclusive language and research related to transgender people in higher education, the experiences of workplace discrimination, and relevant laws that are ever-changing. This topic is important due to the continual discourse on transgender and nonbinary people's rights and experiences.

We all have biases, whether we are conscious of them or not! This interactive presentation will help students define implicit bias and the core elements that make it pervasive in everyday life. Using interactive scenarios, students will learn how to identify implicit bias and develop strategies to mitigate its impact on college campuses. This workshop aims to raise awareness, promote critical thinking, and inspire action toward creating a more just and equitable society.

Want to improve your ability to work across cultural differences? The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is an assessment tool that measures and develops intercultural competence, the ability to communicate and work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. By taking the IDI, college student groups can gain insights into their cultural assumptions and biases, enhance their communication skills, and promote diversity and inclusion on campus. The IDI inventory costs $13 per student and takes about 15 minutes to complete. Participants will need to complete this inventory before this 45 min presentation. The individual results are always confidential and can be discussed with individuals privately, or an informative group summary (with no identifying information) can be compiled and presented during this presentation. Undocumented and DACAmented students face significant barriers in accessing opportunities and achieving success. This professional learning opportunity is designed to help faculty and staff understand the history of the undocumented community and the needs and challenges they face. It is an opportunity for educators to develop and enhance their working knowledge regarding servicing undocumented/DACAmented student populations, terminology, and provide an overview of the current state of DACA and other immigration-related policies.

What is intercultural competence, and is it important? Using the models of cultural theorists Milton Bennett and Darla K. Deardorff, our presenters will help unpack the essential elements of intercultural competence by introducing you to… the CultureBread Person!

Cultural Communities and Mentor Programs provides cultural resources, programs, and services that help Claremont College students thrive. We strive to improve students’ sense of belonging by exploring cultural identity and developing leadership and practical skills for self-agency & community advocacy. This presentation will teach you how our unit supports various underrepresented groups throughout campus.

In this workshop, we will discuss history, laws, and policies affecting undocumented/DACAmented students, provide information about resources for undocumented/DACAmented students on Pomona College’s campus, learn of effective allyship strategies, and share opportunities to connect with other staff to share ideas on supporting undocumented/DACAmented students on Pomona’s campus.
