Opening Convocation, September 1, 2026

Dear Pomona College Community,

The start of the academic year brings renewed energy to campus as we welcome incoming and returning students to the Pomona community. As we prepare, I’m delighted to invite you to the Opening Convocation of the 2026-2027 academic year. It will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, in Bridges Hall of Music (Little Bridges).

Our keynote speaker this year will be Fernando Lozano, Morris B. and Gladys S. Pendleton Professor of Economics, introduced by Brent Carbajal, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College. Professor Lozano will deliver his keynote in Spanish, with simultaneous English translation and several interactive, multilingual activities. Prof. Lozano's address to our community is also an exciting moment for us to recognize the groundbreaking of our new Center for Global Engagement, set to occur this fall.

As we seek to expand Pomona's engagement with the rich global heritage of human cultures, languages and knowledge, I look forward to welcoming our new students on behalf of the College. Malu Estoducto ’27 will also address our community as ASPC president, introduced by Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Avis Hinkson. Everett S. Olive Professor of Music Genevieve Lee, pianist, and College Organist Weicheng Zhao will provide special music for the event.

With best wishes,
Gabi
