CGE Updates & Oldenborg Commemoration

Dear Pomona Community,

Warm greetings in these final days of the semester. It was wonderful to see so many of you during Alumni Weekend, including at the “Dear Oldenborg” events celebrating its history and powerful impact on a Pomona education. Our curated storytelling event was full of heartfelt memories and inspiring journeys of many people touched by the special Oldenborg community that has been a cornerstone at Pomona for over 60 years. You can watch a recording of this moving program and read more stories about Oldenborg’s legacy online. That event was followed by a wonderful open house celebration and award ceremony, plus our final language tables in the building. Well over 400 students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members attended. With enormous gratitude, I’m thankful to the many people who worked to bring these important moments of sharing and community to fruition: the Oldenborg staff and faculty, Advancement colleagues, Language Residents, dining staff, and others across campus.

I am pleased to share with you now additional information about the CGE through our website. It describes how the CGE will grow and strengthen programs, including all those that had been housed in the Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations, the International and Domestic Programs Office, and so much more. The site includes an update shining light on the recent student-initiated PACIFIC conference promoting US-China people-to-people relations. It is the first of several stories the site will offer about the type of interdisciplinary and global-local learning that the CGE will support. We will highlight CGE pilots and affiliated initiatives—hosted by leadership, faculty, staff, various units across campus and my office—that are informing us about programming design for the CGE and creating opportunities to launch new, creative ideas. In addition to the feedback form, the website also now includes FAQs with content that will grow over time.

A few reminders about what’s ahead:

  • Staff from Oldenborg (including International Students & Scholar Services) and the International and Domestic Programs Office (IDPO) have moved to Montgomery Hall. Montgomery is on the corner of Bonita and College Avenues. For ISSS and study away advising, enter from the east side of the building off Bonita.
  • For construction updates and live stream, see the Facilities and Campus Services website.
  • Language tables will resume in the fall, in the Frank Dining Hall Blue Room.

As the programmatic development and construction of the CGE continue across this summer, I look forward to sharing additional updates with you.

Warmly,

Kara Godwin
Assistant Vice President and Chief Global Officer
